HexChat has a great list of plugins and scripts and is compatible with most XChat plugins. XChats library is incredibly extensive. There is a wide range of both useful and fun plugins. It's possible to add an RSS feed, play a game of chess or control an mp3 player via chat while translating everything written to. Raptor is cross-platform (windows/linux/mac). It is very good, but has a few minor bugs that are irritating (confirmed bugs). The major one that puts me off of it is that it stops updating when observing someone else's examine sessions randomly. It does have some Mac-specific functionality, such as support for 5K iMac displays, mixed retina, and non-retina configurations. Fusion includes Unity Mode, which hides the Windows desktop interface and lets you launch Windows applications from the Dock as if the apps are native to macOS. Support for chess variants including 'Bughouse' and 'Crazyhouse' ii. Raptor, FICS desktop client for Mac. Jin, which is Java based and can be executed on a Mac also. XBoard, a multi platform solution! And such a pity that you can't try BabasChess (maybe you can use a emulator to execute it on your Mac). Most chess engines interface to a GUI like Winboard or Chessbase and playing strength, time controls, and other performance-related settings are adjustable from the GUI. Most GUIs also allow the player to set up and edit positions, take back moves, offer and accept draws (and resign), have a 'coach' function to recommend a move when the player.

I have Fritz 9, which I can run on an old machine running Windows. It's ok, but it also seems a bit clunky and awkward with its interface (besides simply looking dated -- which I can handle, since it's free for me -- some of the commands are not where I expect them to be, and don't always function the way I would expect).

That's even more the case with Stockfish, which is great for a free app, but doesn't have much (beyond the game itself, of course) for someone new to chess.

I'm open to buying another Windows chess software, but it would need to be VERY GOOD for beginners to convince me to buy software for an OS that I don't really use anymore.
